Resumo

Several aspects determine the level of information on breastfeeding in pregnant women, which, in turn, may affect the adequate practice of breastfeeding. This study seeks to establish the relationship between demographic characteristics and breastfeeding knowledge in pregnant women attending prenatal care. A total of 270 participants were surveyed to obtain both their level of knowledge and demographic data (parity, age, marital status, residence, educational level, counseling received and prenatal controls). More than half (74.4%) were found to have inadequate knowledge about breastfeeding. The demographic characteristics of the women with regular and inadequate knowledge were similar: age between 20 and 34 years, cohabiting or married marital status, urban residence, completed secondary education and having received counseling. The statistical analysis yielded a p-value of the Chi-square test greater than the significance level (α = 0.05), which implies the rejection of the alternative hypothesis (H1). It is concluded that there is no relationship between breastfeeding knowledge and the demographic factors studied.
